A Bahrain Rugby Legacy Forged in Gold

The Bahrain Golden Oldies, without a doubt, have become one of the most recognisable vets teams in the Middle East with their unique gold logo and timeless spirit.

Formed in 1990, this squad has spent over 30 years bringing people together through their shared love of the game.

“Most of us are far from home, so this team becomes that third place in your life—beyond work and home—where you feel like you truly belong,” says Lee Leach

Over the years, more than 800 players from 24 countries have played for the Golden Oldies. Each player gets their unique legacy number, marking their place in the team’s history.

While the Golden Oldies value friendship and fun, they’re also serious about their rugby. The team trains twice a week, with an optional fitness session on Fridays. They’ve recently competed in tournaments in Bahrain and Doha and are gearing up for their 26th appearance at the Dubai Sevens.

“This year feels different,” says Leach.

“The team is clicking in a way I haven’t seen before. It’s exciting, and we’re ready to give it our best.”

The Golden Oldies are guided by five simple values: family, fun, competition, hard work, and being ambassadors of the sport. These values shape everything they do, on and off the field.

“We want everyone who joins the team to have a positive experience, make great memories, and feel proud to be part of something special,” Leach shares.

Part of what makes this team unique is their inclusivity. While the main squad is for players over 35, they also welcome newcomers of all ages and skill levels. They’ve even introduced a beginners’ program to help new players ease into the sport safely.

Rugby for the Golden Oldies is about the laughs, the stories, and the connections that form along the way.

“You spend 80 minutes playing rugby, but hours afterward building friendships,” Leach explains.
