Building an Ice Hockey Legacy With Shaheen Falcons in Abu Dhabi
The Shaheen Falcons took flight in 2018, inspired by founder Hayez Ahmed Al-Mehairbi’s vision to bring ice hockey to the heart of Emirati sports culture.
Against the odds, Al-Mehairbi has built one of the UAE’s strongest ice hockey teams, competing fiercely at Zayed Sports City Ice Rink in the Emirates Ice Hockey League (EHL) and other local tournaments. The Falcons offer something unique: a chance for Emiratis to connect with a fast-paced, high-skill game while representing their culture and resilience on the ice.
‘Introduction to serious hockey’
Al-Mehairbi’s love for ice hockey began in 1990 when he and his cousin first encountered a hockey stick and puck during a public skate session. Curious, they gave it a try, sparking a passion that would last a lifetime.
“We were hooked from that day”
With no organised leagues or teams at the time, Al-Mehairbi and his cousin began to play informally with a handful of Canadian and American expats who lived in the UAE.
This tight-knit group played regularly, learning the game from other expats who had grown up with hockey. Over time, they began to understand the techniques, rules, and skills involved.
“A Canadian father brought his son to train us during Christmas one year. He taught us how to shoot, skate, and play as a team. It was our introduction to serious hockey.”
This early experience set the stage for Al-Mehairbi’s journey to eventually establish the Shaheen Falcons and promote ice hockey as a sport Emiratis could embrace and excel in.
‘Team to represent that same strength’
After years of developing his skills and knowledge of the game, Al-Mehairbi decided it was time to create a team that would reflect Emirati values and pride. In 2018, he founded the Shaheen Falcons, named after the Shaheen falcon—a revered symbol in UAE culture representing speed, strength, and loyalty.
“The Shaheen falcon is the fastest bird, and we wanted our team to represent that same strength and resilience,”
The Shaheen Falcons quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the UAE’s most competitive teams, regularly facing off against other top squads in the EHL. What makes the Falcons stand out is their commitment to recruiting and training local Emiratis, creating a team that combines local pride with international talent.
“For me, it’s about building a team where Emiratis can thrive and where young players can look up to their own countrymen succeeding in a sport like this”
Hayez Ahmed Al-Mehairbi’s goal is to make ice hockey accessible and exciting for local youth, building a legacy that will endure.
