Liam Hughes, a distinguished football coach with a career spanning multiple continents, exemplifies the virtues of adaptability, continuous learning, and holistic player development.

 

At 34, Hughes has already navigated a rich and varied path, from his early beginnings in the UK to influential coaching roles in Canada, Australia, and the UAE. His dedication to fostering positive club environments and cultures, coupled with his comprehensive approach to player development, has established him as a prominent figure in the world of football coaching.

Beginning his coaching career at the age of 17, Hughes transitioned from an aspiring player to a coach, driven by the competitive nature of football in the UK.

“In the UK, the standard of football is extremely high, and the chances of making it professionally are slim. So, for me, the next best thing was coaching,” Hughes reflects.

His early roles at world renowned clubs such as Manchester City Academy and Preston North End provided a solid foundation for developing his coaching philosophy and honing his skills.

Hughes’s career trajectory took him beyond the UK to countries like Canada, Australia, and the UAE, each providing unique challenges and enriching his coaching repertoire. In Canada, where ice hockey reigns supreme, Hughes focused on nurturing technical skills in young footballers.

“The challenge was to develop less athletic players by concentrating more on the technical side of the game,” he explains. Similarly, in Australia, he adapted his methods to fit the local sports culture, emphasising technical development.

 

‘Everyone wanted to be there’

A cornerstone of Hughes’s coaching philosophy is the creation of a positive environment and culture within a club.

“When I joined one of my previous clubs, we started with just two or three full-time staff members. By the time I left, we had grown to 10 or 11 full-time members, with a cohesive culture where everyone wanted to be there,” Hughes shares.

This inclusive and passionate culture is something he continues to foster in his current role in the UAE.
Understanding and respecting local norms and cultures are paramount for Hughes. In the UAE, he is particularly mindful of religious practices and local customs, adjusting training schedules to accommodate these factors.

“You have to be adaptable. For instance, Fridays are significant here for religious reasons, so we adjust our training sessions accordingly,” he notes.

This adaptability extends to managing a diverse group of players and staff, reflecting the multicultural environment of the UAE.

 

‘We had to stand our ground’

Adaptability is a recurring theme in Hughes’s career. He has seamlessly transitioned through roles such as assistant coach, head coach, coach educator, head of football development, and technical director, each demanding unique skills and approaches.

“One of the biggest tests of adaptability was dealing with a parent who wanted to dictate terms for their child’s training. We had to stand our ground and maintain our club’s values, even if it meant losing a talented player,” Hughes recounts.

His coaching methods also reflect this adaptability. Hughes advocates for a balanced approach, combining technical skill development with game understanding and defensive organisation.

“We want to dominate possession but also be adaptable and organised defensively,” he explains. His global experiences have taught him the importance of flexibility in his coaching style to meet the varied needs of players.

Hughes is a staunch advocate for continuous learning. He earned his UEFA A License in early 2019 and aspires to attain his Pro License.

“The A License took about 18 months to complete, and it’s like learning to drive – you only truly learn when you’re on the road. I’m still learning and adapting my knowledge,” he says.

His commitment to learning is evident in his approach to watching football, where he analyses games with a critical eye, constantly drawing lessons from top managers like Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho.

Player development lies at the heart of Hughes’s coaching philosophy. He focuses on creating opportunities for players to experience different environments through international tournaments.

“We’re taking two of our teams to Sweden to compete in the Gothia Cup, the largest youth football competition in Europe. This exposure is invaluable for their development,” Hughes asserts. He emphasises a holistic approach to player development, balancing technical skills with personal growth.

 

Azul Football Academy

Hughes’s latest venture is the founding of Azul Football Academy in the UAE. Inspired by his favourite club, Everton FC, Hughes named the academy “Azul,” Spanish for blue. The academy aims to provide a structured pathway for young players to advance in their football careers.

“We currently have some promising talents in our U11 and U12 teams, and we’re taking them to international tournaments to expose them to higher levels of competition,” he explains.

The academy is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive environment.

“We ensure that all players, regardless of ability, receive attention and opportunities. It’s about developing the whole player, not just their football skills,” Hughes emphasises. This comprehensive approach is central to Hughes’s coaching philosophy.

Balancing his passion for on-pitch coaching with administrative duties is a significant challenge Hughes faces.

“I’m learning that the off-field stuff is just as important. Planning sessions meticulously and seeking feedback has become crucial,” he acknowledges.

This balance is vital to ensuring both player development and the smooth operation of the academy.

Reflecting on his career, Hughes highlights the importance of mentorship and ongoing learning.

“I’ve had many influential mentors who have shaped my journey. The most rewarding moments come from seeing players develop and succeed, knowing that you’ve played a part in their growth,” he shares.

Looking ahead, Hughes is focused on expanding the impact of Azul Football Academy and continuing his journey of learning and development.

“The ultimate goal is to create a sustainable pathway for players to progress and achieve their dreams,”
