Continuing our previews of teams from the region competing in this years’ Dubai Rugby Sevens, we’re turn our attention to Speranza 22.

Founded as a one-time tribute to honor a lost friend, it has grown into an internationally respected rugby family with a powerful legacy.

What began as a heartfelt reunion has transformed into a team celebrated for its talent, camaraderie, and commitment to giving back. Rory Greene, the driving force behind Speranza 22, shares the story of this extraordinary team and its journey from tribute to tradition.

‘Built around Marco’s memory’

Speranza 22 began in 2013 as a tribute to Marco Speranza, an Argentine rugby player who tragically died in a plane crash. It had been his dream to become a pilot. Unfortunately, on February the 8th, 2013 at the age of 20 during his first lesson, the aeroplane crashed.

Marco was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of 6, he first came to Abu Dhabi. During all of his 10 years in Abu Dhabi he managed to make lots of friends and even kept the ones he left in Buenos Aires. Speranza 22 is the result of all the love Marco gave through the years. All the people that knew him have a special memory of him in their hearts.

Marco was a beloved part of the rugby community, known for his natural talent.

“He was a footballer who took to rugby instantly. Losing him was a shock for everyone.”

To honor his memory, the 2009 under-19 team reunited to play in the Dubai Sevens—a tournament they’d once competed in with Marco. What started as a tribute sparked something much larger than anyone anticipated.

“Seeing the impact on Marco’s family, we thought, ‘Let’s do it again next year,’” Rory said.

Over time, Speranza 22 became an annual commitment, with the team expanding both its reach and mission.

With a unique no-coach policy, players manage themselves on the field.

“These players are usually told what to do by coaches at their clubs. Here, we want them to just play and enjoy the game. We say, ‘Play with a smile,’” Rory explained.

This player-led style has not only made the game enjoyable but has also driven the team to impressive wins at tournaments worldwide.

Speranza 22’s selection process is as unique as its approach on the field. Only players who share a connection to Marco or the Speranza family are chosen.

“Everyone here is part of the extended family we’ve built around Marco’s memory.”

‘Make a difference beyond the field’

Speranza 22 has achieved a remarkable record, with 11 elite cups and six more finals appearances in tournaments over the last decade. Many Speranza players have even gone on to compete internationally, including for New Zealand, Great Britain, and Fiji, marking the team as a true platform for rugby talent.

“We’re proud to have been part of their journey to the national stage.”

The team has raised over £70,000 for charities in the UK and New Zealand, supporting causes beyond the sport. One of their first efforts was for Mike Ballard, a former teammate of Marco who suffered a severe spinal injury while playing rugby. The funds raised helped with Mike’s rehabilitation, reinforcing the team’s commitment to its members.

“Helping Mike was important. It showed how we could make a difference beyond the field.”

‘Why we keep doing this’

As Speranza 22 grows, so do the challenges, from securing sponsorships to logistical hurdles. Fortunately, Rory has a network of sponsors who are committed to the team’s mission, helping keep Speranza’s values alive. Today, Rory’s son and other former players are stepping into management roles, continuing the legacy and bringing fresh energy to the team.

For Speranza 22, the Dubai Sevens is a highlight, bringing together players and supporters from around the globe. The team’s mission remains unchanged: to remember Marco, and inspire through rugby.

“People ask me why we keep doing this,” Rory reflected.

“It’s for Marco, for the family we’ve built, and for the players who make Speranza 22 what it is.”

Speranza 22 is about family, memory, and purpose. What began as a tribute has grown into a rugby family that spans the globe, inspiring everyone who crosses its path.
