Dubai Hurricanes Netball Club: A Beacon of Excellence and Community
Dubai Hurricanes Netball has emerged as a leader in the UAE’s sports scene, driven by the dynamic leadership of Kat Smith, the Director of Netball.
Over the past eight years, the club has seen remarkable growth, achieved significant successes, and continues to plan for an ambitious future.
Part of the larger Dubai Hurricanes sports club, which also includes rugby and cricket, the netball division was founded eight years ago. It has since grown into the largest netball club in the UAE, boasting around 350 players ranging from ages 4 to 55. The club operates through the dedication of volunteers, focusing on providing pathways from beginner to elite levels, ensuring comprehensive training programs for all skill levels.
Kat Smith, who has been the Director of Netball for two years, plays a crucial role in the club’s development. Despite not being a netball player herself, Smith’s background in business management and her passion for sports have driven the club’s success. Her administrative skills have been instrumental in managing the club’s growth, ensuring smooth operations, and fostering a supportive environment for players and coaches alike.
“I’ve never played netball, but my daughter does,” Smith explains. “I wanted to give back to the club and help it grow. My role is about ensuring everyone is happy, finding the right coaches, and making sure the club runs smoothly.”
Training Programs and Coaching Excellence
Hurricanes Netball offers extensive training programs designed to cater to players of all abilities. From foundational skills for young beginners to advanced strategies for elite players, the training encompasses various elements crucial for athlete development. Training sessions cover skills, drills, match play, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and psychology. The club has also started incorporating video analysis and endurance training to enhance performance further.
Elite players undergo intensive twice-weekly training sessions focusing on skills, mobility, and strategy. The majority of the coaches at the Hurricanes have played at high levels and hold UK coaching certifications up to Level 3. Recently, the club employed its first full-time Head Coach, Emily Cowell, to further support the development of both the club and the corporate division of the Hurricanes.
The Netball section has numerous notable achievements. Many of its players represent the UAE national netball team, contributing to the country’s growing reputation in the sport. The club has won prestigious tournaments like the Netball Tournament and the Nakheel League Summer Challenge. Additionally, it organises significant events such as the Saxo Bank 7s :Powered by Nakheel, the Gulfs largest Women and Girls Sports Festival which attracts over 600 participants, and the annual Hurricanes Netball Festival, held alongside the HSBC Rugby Sevens.
These achievements highlight the club’s competitive prowess and its commitment to fostering a sense of community and promoting the sport at all levels. The club’s dedication to organising major events has raised the profile of netball in the region and provided players with valuable opportunities to showcase their talents.
Building a Positive Club Culture
Creating a positive club culture is central to Smith’s vision for the Dubai Hurricanes. The club emphasises values like passion and willingness to learn over mere skill. By developing a close-knit staff group that works cohesively, the netball section of the club ensures that all players, regardless of their ability, receive attention and opportunities. This inclusive approach helps create a supportive and nurturing environment where players can thrive both on and off the court.
Smith’s administrative acumen plays a crucial role in maintaining this positive culture. Her background in managing and owning businesses has equipped her with the skills to oversee the club’s netball operations effectively. By ensuring clear communication, placing the right people in key positions, and fostering a sense of community, she has helped create an environment where players and coaches can focus on their growth and development.
Looking ahead, the Dubai Hurricanes Netball club has ambitious plans for growth. The club aims to provide an exceptional product and pathway from youth to elite international levels. One of the primary goals is to expand the coaching base by training coaches from within. Implementing formal policies, such as safeguarding for volunteers, is also a priority to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all members.
In addition to netball, the club is exploring opportunities to expand into other sports, particularly for men and youth, like cricket. The recently relaunched ‘The Academy’ is a significant step in this direction. For netball it focuses on developing girls outside the club and providing them with extra training to progress through the academy levels.
Kat Smith’s Role and Impact
Smith’s journey with the Dubai Hurricanes began as a volunteer, motivated by her daughter’s involvement in netball. Despite not having a background in the sport, Smith’s expertise in managing people and businesses has been instrumental in the club’s growth. Her ability to organise and streamline operations has allowed coaches to focus on what they do best – coaching.
Her hands-on approach and willingness to learn have earned Smith the respect of both players and coaches. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and continuous improvement, she has helped the club navigate challenges and achieve significant milestones. Her efforts have not only strengthened the club internally but also enhanced its reputation in the wider netball community.
Challenges and Solutions
Running a volunteer-based club of this size comes with its challenges. Finding and retaining qualified coaches, managing a large number of players, and ensuring effective communication are some of the ongoing issues the club faces. However, Smith’s strategic approach has helped address these challenges effectively.
By prioritising clear communication and creating a structured environment, the club has managed to keep volunteers engaged and motivated. The recent hiring of a full-time Netball Head Coach is a testament to the club’s commitment to providing high-quality training and support to its members. Additionally, the focus on training coaches from within the club ensures a sustainable pipeline of skilled trainers who understand the club’s values and ethos.
Dubai Hurricanes Netball is not just about competition; it’s about building a community. The club actively engages with local schools and encourages girls to take up netball, aiming to create a lasting impact on the sport’s popularity in the region. By providing a supportive environment where players can develop both their skills and their confidence, the club contributes to the overall well-being of its members.
The annual tournaments and events organised by the club play a crucial role in promoting netball and bringing the community together. These events provide a platform for players to showcase their talents, foster healthy competition, and build lifelong friendships. The club’s efforts in organising such large-scale events have not only enhanced its reputation but also highlighted the growing interest in netball in the UAE.
Future Aspirations
The Hurricanes appear to have a clear vision for the future. The club aims to continue its growth trajectory by expanding its reach and impact. One of the primary goals is to develop an elite pathway that can nurture young talent and prepare them for international competitions. By providing comprehensive training programs and access to top-tier coaching, the club aims to produce players who can compete at the highest levels.
Under the leadership of Smith, the club exemplifies excellence, community spirit, and a commitment to the growth and development of netball in the UAE. From providing comprehensive training programs to organising major events, the club has made significant strides in promoting the sport and supporting its players. With ambitious plans for the future, Dubai Hurricanes Netball is poised to continue its journey of success and make a lasting impact on the sports landscape of the region. Kat Smith’s leadership, coupled with the dedication of the club’s volunteers and members, ensures that the Dubai Hurricanes Netball club will remain a beacon of excellence and community for years to come.
