Donegal Dubai GAA Club: A New Community Hub in the UAE
In a recent interview, Liam Doherty, Chairman of the newly formed Donegal Dubai GAA club, discussed the clubโs origins, goals, and plans for the future.
The club, founded by Doherty and Connor Gibbons, aims to bring together the Irish community in the UAE, particularly those from Donegal, and create a vibrant social and sporting hub.
The idea for the club emerged last summer over a casual lunch, where Doherty and Gibbons realised the potential for a Donegal-centred GAA club in Dubai, given the significant number of Irish expatriates in the region. Within its first year, the club has already attracted over 50 members, far exceeding expectations.
“Weโve seen a lot of interest, not just from Donegal natives, but from Irish people across the board and even non-Irish members,” said Doherty. The clubโs inclusivity is a core principle, welcoming anyone interested in learning about Gaelic football.
Adapting to the UAEโs climate, the clubโs games follow a modified format: nine-a-side matches with 14-minute halves, played early in the morning to avoid the intense heat. The season consists of several tournaments rather than a traditional league, allowing for flexibility and multiple opportunities to win.
“This year is about getting members comfortable”
‘Our doors are open to all’
Beyond the sport, the club emphasises building a strong community. “This year is about getting members comfortable,” Doherty explained. “Weโre not focused on winning championships right away. Itโs about creating a welcoming, social environment.”
Future plans include establishing a womenโs team, a juvenile division, and potentially expanding into hurling as the club grows. For now, the focus remains on Gaelic football and fostering a sense of belonging among its members.
Doherty extended an invitation to anyone interested in joining the club, whether for the sport or the social connections. “Even if youโve never played before, weโre here to help you learn. Our doors are open to all.”
