Rabdan Driving Cycling As Both A Sport And A Lifestyle In The UAE

The UAE’s cycling scene is growing rapidly, and Abu Dhabi’s Rabdan Cycling Team is at the forefront of this movement.

Since its establishment around 2015, Rabdan has evolved from a group of passionate riders into one of the most recognised teams in the region. Recently, Hazza Almezaini, a key team member, shared insights into the team’s journey, challenges, and their goals to drive cycling as both a sport and a lifestyle in the UAE.

‘Wake up early, train, go to work’

For Almezaini, cycling began as a simple hobby back in 2016 but quickly turned into a structured pursuit. By 2020, he was racing competitively, often finding himself on the podium at UAE and GCC events.

“I started cycling as something normal, just a part of life,” Almezaini explained.

“But in 2020, I became more focused on racing, and that’s when I started seeing results.” Yet, he remains humble, noting, “We’re not professionals yet, but we’re working hard to reach that level.”

Beyond competition, cycling has become a balanced way of life for Almezaini and his teammates. He describes the sport’s influence on his daily routine, helping him to manage work, fitness, and family commitments.

“Cycling gives you structure. You wake up early, train, go to work, and then have time with your family. It also gives you energy for the rest of the day,” Almezaini said. He also noted the health benefits that come with regular training, adding with a laugh, “I can eat what I want without worrying too much because the training burns so many calories.”

Rabdan Cycling Team, one of Abu Dhabi’s first Emirati cycling teams, has marked its presence with numerous podium finishes in the UAE’s cycling scene. One of their most significant achievements was winning the Al Salam Race in Dubai, a major event in the regional cycling calendar. Almezaini sees these accomplishments as stepping stones toward their goal of consistently dominating every race they enter.

‘Women are such an important part’

Rabdan’s inclusivity efforts gained momentum with the recent addition of a women’s cycling team. Since its introduction last year, the women’s team has become a vital part of Rabdan, bringing new energy and purpose to the entire group.

“Women are such an important part of our lives,” Almezaini said. “They are our mothers, sisters, wives, and everything. Having them in the team has really pushed us forward.” After an impressive debut at events like the Al Salam Championship, Rabdan is looking to expand the women’s team and possibly bring in international riders to bolster their squad.

Like any dedicated athlete, Almezaini has faced obstacles, including a severe ankle injury during a race last year. While the injury kept him from outdoor cycling, Almezaini’s spirit remains undeterred.

“I had a big accident last year, and it broke my leg from the ankle,”

“But I’m recovering well, training indoors, and I’ll be back stronger in the future.”

He credits the close-knit community within Rabdan Cycling Team as a source of ongoing support and motivation.

“We are like a family. We push each other to be better every day, and even if someone gets a better opportunity, we support them 100%.”

‘A top cycling city’

As Rabdan continues to grow, their goals extend beyond personal victories. They aim to make Abu Dhabi one of the world’s leading cities for cycling.

“We want Abu Dhabi to be a top cycling city,” Almezaini explained, highlighting the team’s role in promoting cycling as both a sport and a lifestyle.

On the competitive front, Rabdan remains focused on setting new records, expanding their roster, and building a legacy in UAE cycling.

“Our goal is to win, to be the best, and to make cycling a way of life for everyone,” Almezaini said.

Rabdan’s journey is about more than just racing; it’s about fostering a culture of health, community, and resilience that they hope will inspire the next generation of cyclists in the UAE.

With their sights set on future achievements, Rabdan Cycling Team is a powerful force in the UAE cycling scene, constantly pushing boundaries and promoting a healthier, active lifestyle across the region.
