Cairo Old Crocs Old-School Rugby at the Heart of Egypt
Cairo Rugby Club is a proud part of Egyptโs rugby scene, bringing the spirit of old-school rugby to the heart of Cairo.
Founded in 1980, the club has grown into a community-driven team that combines tradition and passion. Its vets team, the Cairo Old Crocs, extends this legacy by representing the club at the Dubai 7โs.
“We see the Old Crocs as a proud extension of Cairo Rugby,” said Anthony Hanna, who oversees community development at the club. While Anthony is a current squad member of Cairo Rugby Menโs 15s team, he has yet to play with the Old Crocs, but is a supporting figure behind the scenes, ensuring the clubโs smooth operation. The Old Crocs focus on veterans and celebrate players who were once part of Cairo Rugby, whether they were based in Egypt or contributed to the clubโs journey over the years.
The clubโs story began uniquely, with its iconic cow-print jerseys inspired by a raffle fundraiser in Kenya. This quirky history, combined with its strong values of teamwork, respect, and community, makes Cairo Rugby truly special.
“Itโs about building connections and staying true to our rugbyโs roots.”
Josh North, a long-time member, and Ross McGrath, both current Cairo Rugby and Old Crocs players, are just some of the individuals who have helped shape the clubโs identity.
The club also focuses on growing the sport in Egypt, running weekly touch rugby sessions and offering support to players from all backgrounds. The Club prides itself on itโs Financial Assistance Fund, ensuring rugby is accessible to everyone, covering the financial costs for those who might not otherwise afford it.
With its cow-print jerseys, rich history, and strong community spirit, Cairo Rugby continues to represent Egypt proudly at events like the Dubai 7โs.
