Bringing Women Together Through Chameleons Rugby
The Chameleons led by Coach Hassan Al Sabeh, are a team that gives women the chance to play rugby at high-level tournaments like the Dubai 7s, even if their local clubs canโt compete.
With players from countries like Lebanon, Egypt,ย Syria, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France, Scotland and Cameroon, who live in the MENA regionโincluding those who have represented their national teamsโThe Chameleons are as diverse as it is determined.
The Origins of Chameleon Rugby
The story of the Chameleons began with Coach Al Sabeh, who brought together players from various countries and backgrounds. Drawing inspiration from his experiences, he coined the name ‘Chameleons’ to reflect the team’s ability to adapt and thrive.
The Chameleons began to offer players who didnโt have full squads a chance to compete in major tournaments like the Dubai 7s. Over time, the team evolved into a symbol of inclusion and opportunity, representing players who lived across the Gulf.
‘We share the same’
The Chameleon players come from various backgrounds, including national team representatives from Egypt, Syria, and Qatar.
“Weโre not based in one place. Our players come from different countries, but we share the same goalโto play and enjoy rugby,” says Coach Sabeh.
Every year, the team invites players looking for an opportunity to compete, building friendships and memories that last a lifetime.
The Dubai 7s is one of the biggest rugby tournaments in the region, and The Chameleons take preparation seriously. Starting months in advance. Coach Sabeh evaluates players, creates game plans, and ensures everyone is ready for the challenge.
Despite the logistical hurdles of being scattered across different countries, the team works hard to build chemistry.
“Weโve played against or alongside each other before, which helps us come together quickly,” explains Stephanie Liwo, a player with 16 years of experience.
‘Energy and love for rugby’
Chameleon’s Women’s Rugby is about empowering women and growing the sport. The team dreams of expanding, bringing in players from more countries, and even fielding multiple squads in big tournaments like the Dubai 7s.
“We want to empower women in rugby, not just in the Gulf but worldwide,” says Coach Sabeh.
At this yearโs Dubai 7s, The Chameleons promises exciting games filled with creativity.
“We want people to see our energy and love for rugby when they watch us play,” says Stephanie.
With a mix of national-level experience and raw determination, the team is aiming for a spot in the finals this year!
