Ramit Rugby Unites for Mental Illness Awareness
Ramit Rugby, short for Rugby Against Mental Illness Together, was founded by Barryย Kavanagh with a mission far beyond the game.
Based in the UK, this invitational rugby team draws players from various backgrounds, united in raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
Competing in rugby sevens tournaments around England and at the Dubai Sevens each year, Ramit Rugby aims to spread its message of mental wellness and support. This Edition of the 2024 Dubai Sevens, theyโll face Baku Exiles, Rhinos, and Froggies Rugby in the Dubai Sevensโ International Vets Social.
Barry Kavanagh founded Ramit Rugby to tackle mental health issues head-on through the sport he loves.
“Our team is about more than winning games; itโs about bringing people together to support mental health”
Rugby Against Mental Illness Together is more than just a nameโitโs a promise to raise awareness for mental illness and suicide prevention, issues that affect millions in the UK and beyond.
Team manager Tom Hughes, who assists Kavanagh in managing Ramit Rugbyโs operations, echoed the sentiment.
“We want to show that rugby can be a powerful platform to bring people together and raise awareness about mental health”
Supporting Two Essential Charities
Ramit Rugby partners with two UK-based charities: Teac Tom and ManGang UK. Teac Tom provides vital suicide prevention services and grief counseling to families affected by suicide in the Republic of Ireland.
“Teac Tom is essential in their community, offering support to families and individuals when they need it most,” Kavanagh explained.
ManGang UK is a growing movement across southern England, providing safe spaces where men can openly discuss their feelings and reduce the stigma around mental health struggles.
“ManGang UKโs approach is simple but effective: creating a safe space where men can talk without judgment,” Hughes shared.
โItโs life-changing for so many, and weโre proud to support them.โ
These organisations are vital resources in mental health support, offering essential frontline services. Ramit Rugby helps by raising funds and awareness to expand their reach.
“Our goal is to provide as much support as possible for these charities to continue their important work,” Kavanagh said.
Ramit Rugby isnโt bound to one city or league; itโs an inclusive team that brings together players from all over the UK for invitation-only matches.
“Our players come from diverse backgrounds, each joining to support the cause and enjoy rugby in a welcoming environment,” Kavanagh explained.
The teamโs flexibility means they invite both players and teams to join, building a community around mental health awareness.
“Weโre not just here to play rugby. Weโre here to build connections,” Kavanagh added.
With friends, family, and fans often joining them for matches, Ramit Rugby fosters a close-knit community that extends beyond the field.
“Itโs a chance to bring our mission to an international audience and to compete with purpose.”
The teamโs training is intentionally flexible, reflecting the understanding that players have commitments beyond rugby.
“Itโs about understanding each otherโs strengths and connecting as a team.”
Playing for Mental Health Awareness
While Ramit Rugby is competitive, their core focus remains on mental health. The Dubai Sevens combines competition and camaraderie, making it a perfect match for their mission.
“Weโre here to compete, but more importantly, weโre here to promote mental wellness,” Kavanagh shared.
“Itโs an opportunity to spread awareness and encourage conversations about mental health.”
The team raises funds through ticket sales, merchandise, and donations, directing all proceeds to Teac Tom and ManGang UK.
“Weโre dedicated to supporting these charities that provide crucial mental health resources,” Hughes said.
“Every match we play helps us contribute to their life-saving work.”
Looking to the future, Kavanagh and Hughes are focused on expanding Ramit Rugbyโs impact. Their goals include increasing participation, strengthening community ties, and raising even more awareness for mental health.
“We want Ramit Rugby to be a team known not just for its players but for its commitment to a greater cause,” Hughes explained.
They also hope to introduce development programs that provide players with mentorship and coaching while continuing to build their mental health partnerships.
“Whether through the sport or through our partnerships, we want Ramit Rugby to be a source of strength and community.”
‘A chance to show the world’
As Ramit Rugby heads to the Dubai Sevens, they bring with them a mission thatโs about more than just winning., theyโre determined to make a meaningful impact.
“This tournament is a chance to show the world what Ramit Rugby is about”
