Riyadh Rugby Heads to Dubai 7s Packing Quite A Punch
As Saudi Arabiaโs premier rugby club, Riyadh RFC is set to compete in the prestigious International Vets division, a highly competitive category that features seasoned veterans and ex-pros from across the globe.
However, this tournament represents far more than the matches themselves. For Riyadh, itโs an opportunity to grow the sport in Saudi, inspire the next generation, and lay the groundwork for even greater milestones next season.
A Team of Rugby Legends
Riyadh Rugbyโs squad for the Dubai 7s is one of the most exciting in its history, featuring a lineup of former professional players who have excelled at the highest levels of the sport.
- Matt Banahan: A Bath Rugby legend known for his power and versatility.
- Tom Varndell: Former Leicester Tigers and England winger, one of the Premiershipโs all-time top try-scorers.
- Tim Bateman: A former Mฤori All Black, bringing skill and composure in critical moments.
- Willi Heinz: A former England international and experienced scrum-half, providing leadership and precision.
- Hugh Pyle: A towering lock from Stade Franรงais, adding strength to the forward pack.
- Andrew Durutalo: A dynamic USA international known for his speed and physicality.

These players, combined with Riyadh Rugbyโs core group of local and expats talent, make for a formidable squad. Their presence not only enhances the teamโs chances on the field but also highlights the growing ambition and professionalism of the club.
Depth Across the Club: U35s Join the Competition
In addition to the International Vets squad, Riyadh Rugby is showcasing its Under-35s team at the Dubai 7s. This inclusion highlights the club’s depth and dedication to developing homegrown talent and younger players who represent the future of rugby in Saudi Arabia.
“The U35s squad is just as important to our mission,” said Jimmy Wheeler, the clubโs captain.
“It shows that our club isnโt just about importing talentโweโre nurturing it, too. This tournament is an opportunity for all of us to grow and learn as a club.”
‘Dubai 7s isnโt just a tournament for usโitโs a stage’
For Wheeler, the Dubai 7s represents more than just a chance to competeโitโs a platform to spotlight the rapid growth of rugby in Saudi Arabia and attract more players, fans, and sponsors to the sport.
“The Dubai 7s isnโt just a tournament for usโitโs a stage,” Wheeler explained.
“Itโs our opportunity to show the rugby world whatโs happening in Saudi Arabia and inspire people back home to pick up the game. We want to build something that lasts, something that continues to grow long after this event.”
Riyadh Rugby has been a trailblazer for the sport in the Kingdom, fostering a strong community of players and supporters. From grassroots programs to competitive teams, the club has laid a solid foundation.
Training for the Challenge
Preparing for the Dubai 7s has been no easy task. The International Vets division is known for its high level of competition, with teams made up of experienced and skilled players.
“Sevens rugby is fast, intense, and physically demanding,” Wheeler said.
“Weโve focused on fitness, strategy, and teamwork. Having ex-professionals on the squad helps us approach the game with a more strategic mindset, and their leadership has been invaluable.”
The U35s have also been working tirelessly, blending raw talent with guidance from the more experienced players, ensuring the entire club is ready to make a mark at the tournament.
The journey to the Dubai 7s wouldnโt have been possible without the support of Riyadh Rugbyโs sponsors.
“Their support has made all of this possibleโfrom our preparations to traveling to Dubai,” Wheeler said.
“With the right support, we can do so much more to grow the sport in the Kingdom, from grassroots programs to competing in more international tournaments.”
The Dubai 7s – More Than a Tournament
The Dubai 7s is one of the biggest events in the rugby calendar, known for its high-energy matches and festival atmosphere.
“Our participation shows that Saudi rugby is on the rise,” Wheeler said.
“This is a chance to network, learn, and gain exposure for what weโre building back home.”
With teams in both the International Vets and U35s divisions, Riyadh Rugby is showcasing its depth, ambition, and determination to make rugby a cornerstone of Saudi Arabiaโs sporting culture.
