What Women’s Rugby Can Teach Us

Published On: 2 April 2018By

We give you some reasons why you should find your local Women’s team and sign up.

Women’s rugby is a sport notorious for being physical and leaving players with bruises, scratches and, sometimes, a high number of injuries. But off the field, the rugby atmosphere is unique in its camaraderie both within and with other teams.

A recent influx of rookie players signing up to teams in the region is bringing more of the deserved attention that this sport needs. The dedication to tournaments from all the teams in the Womenโ€™s Inter Gulf League have been an accurate display of this distinct sportโ€™s conduct.

If you ever thought that womenโ€™s rugby was made up of a group of large, masculine, women who run around a field unremorsefully hitting each other, I can tell you right now that neither of those is true.

Womenโ€™s rugby is just like any other sports team, made up of a group of strong individuals who sign up to play one of the hardest sports in the world, and love every minute of it.

Everyone who plays can agree that there is nothing better. But, just in case you need some more convincing, here are some of the many reasons why you should find your local team and sign up.

It’s Empowering

Playing rugby makes you fast, agile, and strong. It’s physically and mentally straining, but the ability to push yourself to the limit is an incredible accomplishment.

It’s a contact sport, scary at first but you go on the field and you feel powerful. You feel like you have total control of your body, of your mind, and of the game. There is nothing like the feeling of tackling someone, running with the ball, or scoring a try.

It’ For Eveyrone

There is a spot for any person on a team, regardless of shape or size. Front row players are solid and powerful. Locks are tall and strong. Back lines are quick, resilient, and have unbelievable endurance. Some girls can run forever. Even a scrum half who is 5’1 can find her niche.

You will see how strong you really are

Rugby players know how strong and capable they are. Learning how to tackle teaches us that no matter your size, you can take anyone down with the right technique. Tackling low and wrapping your arms around the opposing player will take them down, no matter how big they may be.

Part Of A Family And A Team

Whether you play fifteens, tens or sevens rugby, you are together on the field, and you have to work as a cohesive unit to stand a chance of winning. Rugby is so much about physically throwing your body on the line for your teammates during games and training, and that intense appreciation, love, trust, and support for each other is what the team reflects.

Most clubs have a senior section comprising of a menโ€™s, ladies and veteranโ€™s squad, and mini and youth sections providing rugby for both girls and boys.
